If I was a craftier person, I’d love to make little felt figures for Ellie and Jackson for their birthdays! But seeing as I’m not, this little nod will have to do! Thanks, Bloesem for the review! Love the little Ms. Fox!

Correspondence Stock

My new favorite! Bee Correspondence Cards from the MET! What’s not to like about these golden jewels? I’ve already made so many notes to friends and family and love the little spell they’ve cast on me.

I’d also LOVE to have at some point in my lifetime a signet ring made with this same bumble bee. It would become my family crest, so to say, and I can just see it being passed down from generation to generation. Because really, what other symbol would be better for a hard-working family?

Love this Alice in Wonderland print. Makes me want to start a collection of book prints for a little library in my house (which I don’t have, but could have in the future).

Destination Scratch-off

I was asked earlier this evening which country I think is the “best” or my favorite. How can you pick one? Just thinking of all the countries I’ve scratched off… it’s an overwhelming thought. And I’m not done yet…

Power of Art – Bernini

Posted: August 17th, 2010 | Author: stacey | Filed under: Art & Design | Tags: , , , | Comments Off

Tonight my brain is full of art and art history. I’m watching one of my favorites, Simon Schama’s The Power of Art, specifically Bernini. I can’t seem to get enough of art history and each time I review a work of art, I always learn something new. It’s strange to think I’ve been a student of art history for years, yet I still feel like I’m just getting started. How can one person know infinite knowledge of every corner of art throughout history? Maybe Bree is getting closer, but I’m sure even Simon Schama has to hit the books (or jet-setting to Italy) before eloquently retelling tales of art history’s bad boys and play boys.

Just look at a close up of this Bernini sculpture, Pluto and Proserpina. If this isn’t alluring I don’t know what is… I can’t believe human hands created something this outstanding and so full of raw flesh and blood – out of stone cold marble. Amazing. I can’t help but feel completely drawn to these intimate human emotions. Schama focuses on many of Bernini’s works, but none more significant, you can even say erotic, than The Ecstacy of Saint Theresa. Find out for yourself by following the link or watching the show.

Calatrava’s DIA South Terminal Designs

Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava is working on designs for DIA’s south terminal makeover, including a FasTracks train station, a Westin hotel and a rail bridge over Pena Boulevard.

This is why I love living in Denver. I can’t wait to arrive at the airport. See more pictures here on the Denver Post.

“Stay”cation – Denver Art Museum

Posted: July 3rd, 2010 | Author: stacey | Filed under: Art & Design | Tags: , , | Comments Off

Today is the first day of July, which means the Denver Art Museum is free to the local public! I never get tired of looking at works of art from ages past, indulging in people watching, and a sweet treat from the museum cafe. However, I did not purchase a ticket the new exhibit, King Tut, featuring treasures from his tomb, including his gold sandals (are they like these?) worn by the mummy. I think I’ll hold off until the end of summer, when the crowds have all disappeared.

My favorite dark corner of the museum is the European floor. There was a time, due to lack of education, when I detested Renaissance art, but since college and teaching, I’ve fallen completely in love with centuries of European artwork and the juicy gossip accompanying various artists. I enjoy the rare portraits we carry at the DAM, for example the earliest known portrait of Henry VIII is hanging simply and very understated on the wall next to other beautifully detailed portraits of royalty* see above.

What is your favorite type of art? Favorite museum? Artist?

Around Town – Seeing Pink

Posted: July 2nd, 2010 | Author: stacey | Filed under: Art & Design, Seasons, Travel | Tags: , | Comments Off

I love Denver in the summertime. Even though it doesn’t have a beach, I still love all the things happening around town. Joseph and I live in the thick of it all, so we can take a stroll at any moment and find fun things to do (for free)!

The Biennial of the Americas is here in Denver the entire month of July. You can help Denver celebrate anything and everything art related (that means dance and music too) by visiting events throughout the city. You can click on the above link to check out scheduled events.

Joseph and I took these photos of the Biennial opening day location of the recently renovated McNichols building. I think everything in Denver should be covered in pink! It was amazing and oh-so summery!

Projects – Lotta Prints

Posted: July 2nd, 2010 | Author: stacey | Filed under: Art & Design, Books | Tags: , , | Comments Off

Today I visited Talulah Jones for some birthday stock-ups and I fell in love with this Lotta Prints book. I’d like to try some of these projects with my new students this fall. Printing projects are an instant winner in any art room! Who doesn’t love printmaking?

Beloved Scandinavian designer Lotta Jansdotter shows how easy it is to print patterns on all sorts of surfaces. Using stencils, rubber stamps, and other easy techniques, the projects and processes range from simple prints easy for beginners to more involved projects for experienced artists. Stencil leaves on the walls, stamp flowers on wrapping paper, screen-print on a skirt. Beautiful photographs inspire while step-by-step instructions and illustrations explain the basics. Plus, Lotta has included eight ready-to-use stencil pages with hand-drawn patterns, so crafters can easily achieve her signature style.

Thanks to the folks at We Love Typography, you can spend hours searching for font-related images in the color of __________ (insert color here). Today I’m feeling YELLOW.

Check out Let’s Colour Project… I think this is a brilliant idea! Colors change our mood and the way we respond to things. What do you think about painting your city?

Grey is out. Gloom is gone. It’s time to live our lives in colour.

The Let’s Colour Project is a worldwide initiative from DuluxDulux ValentineCoral and Marshall to transform grey spaces with colourful paint. A mission to spread colour all over the world.

We are working together with local communities across the globe, rolling up our sleeves to paint streets, houses, schools and squares.
